Winter is a mixed bag in the mountains!!

This winter has truly been a mixed bag in the mountains.  While many of us have enjoyed skiing, snowboarding & sledding many of us have also endured power outages, slick roads and fallen trees among other obstacles.   Winter can be a tricky time to live in the mountains but it sure is worth it.  The beauty of the snow falling (and laying) is truly difficult to describe.  If you are someone who has never visited Franklin or seen snow in the mountains it is time for you to visit

Real Esate in the Mountains & Winter!!

Winter is the perfect time to look at real estate in the mountains.  I know it's cold (yes it is) but it's also beautiful and more importantly prices are down in the winter (even more so this year) and with the leaves off the trees you can actually see how the land lays (and if you have any neighbors).  Some people that purchase their home in the summer have been surprised by what they couldn't see when the leaves were on well....now they can.  So while it may be cold, the beauty, prices & views of winter make this the perfect time to look at purchasing a mountain home and what better area than the surrounding area of Franklin, NC.  Feel free to call Sherry at 828.421.1225, e-mail: Sherry@exitsells.com or visit http://www.franklinnative.com/

Our small town really knows how to celebrate Independence Day!  The 4th of July Fireworks & Fun Day will be held at the Macon County Veterans Memorial Recreation Park just south of Franklin, NC off US 441 on Saturday, July 4. Activities begin at 11am and conclude around 9:30pm with the largest fireworks display in the area.  Numerous bands will be playing throughout the day including Frog Town 4, Rye Holler Boys, The Loose Cannons, Brian Sanders, Touch of Class along with others. With great food, games and fun for all ages (and don't forget a swim suit to cool off in the creek) we are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Well I wouldn't go as far as say that swine flu is another reason to buy and live in a home in or around Franklin, NC but chalk it up to going in the right direction.  While swine flu may not be a reason to live in the Mountains of Western NC there ARE some really good ones:

  1. Traffic-we have around 10 traffic lights in the whole town.  Traffic jams we really don't know the meaning of those.  The only fingers you get waving at you here are of the friendly nature.
  2. No lines-even in the best restaurants you will rarely experience a wait of any kind (never mind need a reservation). Want to go see a movie? Go play at the Fun Factory? History or Tartans museum?  Nope no lines there either.
  3. Clean air-come to the mountains, take a deep breath and smell fresh clean air.  It is amazing.
  4. Views-to wake up every morning and look out your window or door, while your driving around or sitting on your porch truly the views in my opinion get no better.

While I could go on&on, fishing, wildlife, lakes, streams, waterfalls, hiking.......I feel I've made my point.  No swine flu is not the reason to think of moving to the mountains but just another added benefit to less people more wildlife and a little elbow room.

The environmental group, Wild South, plans to sue the Macon County Airport Authority and other parties involved in the proposed extension of the runway siting they have violated the National Historic Preservation Act by ignoring the archaeological significance of the airport site.  Indian artifacts were discoved as the digging started for the extension a few years ago and work immediately stopped while a study was done.  The group is also contending that the Endangered Species Act along with the National Environmental Policy Act were violated claiming endangerment to species in both the Iotla Creek & Little Tennessee River by runoff from the extension.  To read more of the ensuring law suit click HERE.

Why Macon County is a Great Place to Call Home

Welcome to Macon County, one of the fastest growing

regions in North Carolina. State statistics only confirm what

its residents already know — Macon County is a great place

to live.

Macon County is home to more than 32,550 full-time

residents. In a sense, however, the true population of the

county is much higher. Because Macon contains so many

second homes, its population increases during late spring

and summer.

There are many reasons that Macon is so popular, but

the incredible natural beauty of the county — coupled with

the true, southern hospitality of its people — may be the

most important.

The 517 square miles of Macon County includes the

town of Franklin (the county seat) and Highlands, plus

numerous smaller communities. The elevation ranges from

1,900 feet in the Little Tennessee River, to 4,118 feet in

Highlands, to 5,500 feet at Standing Indian. Temperatures

vary from an average of 40 degrees in January, the coldest

month, to an average of 78 degrees in July, the hottest.

While the climate may be mild, there are still four, distinct

seasons.
